Case Background

On November 17th, 2021, the number three air cylinder set stopped working because its temperature of scavenging was too high. All piston rings of the set had been found broken.

Investigation Situation

Our company had boarded the ship for investigation on December 1st, 2021. We collected documents related to maintenance and operation of the main engine and discussed and confirmed relevant operations with the chief engineer. After checking the fuel test and analysis results of the main engine, we found that the abnormal problem was not caused by fuel. Therefore, we reviewed the engine performance data in September, October and November. It showed that the engine was in good condition. Finally, we checked the cylinder oil used by this set and concluded that the initial abnormal working condition of the main engine was caused by the long-term use of incorrect cylinder oil.

Solution

Replace and use the correct cylinder oil.
