Case Overview

In June 2021, a Chinese heavy industry enterprise transported a crane and its parts to French Guiana Port. After the subject cargo arrived at French Guiana Port, the crane overturned and collapsed during the hoisting and installation process, caused the crane and several containers damaged. The enterprise claimed its insurer in total EUR 89,519,536.87. Frad was assigned by the insurer to conduct a survey on-site and investigate the accident in French Guiana.

Case Overview

Process

1. Frad risk management engineer went to the accident scene located in French Guiana to conduct the survey on-site and communicated with all concerned parties to understand the real origin of the loss.

2. After multiple detailed surveys on-site, we found that the Carrier changed the confirmed hoisting plan, then operated as the changed plan. This caused the upper part to have a height difference when the crane was lifting, which should be the origin of damage.

3.Confirmed that the crane was damaged during the installation process.

4. Assessed and confirmed the amount of loss.

5. Summary findings to a report, which determined that the accident occurred in the process that fixing the upper- and lower-part structures of the crane with HR bolt, which belongs to the engineering installation node. The responsibility of this policy had terminated when the accident occurred, and the accident was caused by installation risks. The loss was not within the policy coverage.

Result

Since the loss was not within the policy coverage, the insurer was exempted from compensating.
